The 2026-27 NBA season starts Tuesday, October 20, 2026 with a three-game opening night on NBC. Boston plays at Detroit at 3pm ET, Philadelphia plays at New York at 7pm, and Oklahoma City plays at San Antonio at 9:30pm. The middle game is the one the league built the night around: LeBron James’s first game as a 76er, at Madison Square Garden, against the defending champions. The regular season runs through Sunday, April 11, 2027.

The third game is a rematch of the Western Conference Finals, which San Antonio won in seven after Oklahoma City had gone 8-0 through the first two rounds. The first is Boston’s first game after trading Jaylen Brown, against a Detroit team that finished first in the East last season and lost in the second round.

The noon game is a Finals rematch. The 5pm game is LeBron James returning to Los Angeles for the first time as a visitor after eight seasons with the Lakers, which is the single most obviously engineered slot on the calendar. The 2:30pm game is Giannis Antetokounmpo’s first Christmas with Miami.

NBA Cup

The fourth edition of the in-season tournament runs on the following dates.

Moving the final to Hinkle is the interesting decision. It is a 1928 fieldhouse on the Butler University campus, it seats 9,100 after renovations cut it down from an original 15,000, and it is the building where the closing scenes of Hoosiers were shot in the autumn of 1985. Putting a nationally televised professional final in a room that size is a deliberate choice about atmosphere over gate.

What the schedule tells you about the season

Schedule-makers are not neutral, and the 2026-27 calendar is a fairly blunt statement about where the league thinks its audience is.

Philadelphia, New York, San Antonio and Oklahoma City carry the marquee slots. Three of those four are obvious: the champion, the team that beat the champion’s conference rival, and the team with Victor Wembanyama. The fourth is a 45-37 team from last season that added a 41-year-old, which tells you how much of a national-television schedule is built on one name.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, appears on Christmas as the opponent in LeBron’s return rather than as a story of its own. That is the clearest signal of how the league reads the post-James Lakers, at least until Luka Doncic changes it.
