Victor Wembanyama is 7’4” (224 centimeters) with a wingspan of 8 feet and change, and before he played a single NBA game he had already been discussed by LeBron James, in an on-camera postgame, as “an alien.” The label stuck because it was accurate. A player of his height has never, by Basketball-Reference’s age-matched search, produced his Year-One NBA counting stats, his Year-One defensive impact, or his Year-One three-point volume at anything close to his percentage. The regular comparison points, Ralph Sampson, Gheorghe Mureșan, Yao Ming, Kristaps Porziņģis, are not comparisons so much as reference points to explain why the right comparisons are actually closer to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon. The 2023–24 Rookie of the Year and 2024–25 All-NBA selections are the start of the case, not the case.

Le Chesnay and the Nanterre youth system

He was born January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, a western suburb of Paris. His father, Félix Wembanyama, is Congolese and was a track-and-field athlete at the French domestic level. His mother, Élodie de Fautereau, played basketball in the French domestic second tier and after her playing career coached at the youth level at Nanterre. His older sister Eve played professional basketball in France’s LFB. His younger brother Oscar plays in France’s youth system.

He joined the youth program at JSF Nanterre, a suburban Paris club famous for its developmental pipeline and its 2013 French Pro A championship, at eleven. By thirteen he was 6’11”. By fifteen he was measuring out at just over 7’2” at French national team under-17 gatherings. By that point the Nanterre coaching staff had routed him to work on guard footwork in the U-15s and U-17s even though he was the team’s tallest player by nearly six inches, on the theory that his height would take care of itself and his handle and passing needed to track with his length. That single coaching decision, repeated inside multiple European youth programs, is the mechanical reason his skill set reached the NBA the way it did.

ASVEL and Metropolitans 92

After a season each with Nanterre (2019–21) and ASVEL (2021–22, in Lyon, under Tony Parker’s ownership), he joined Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 for the 2022–23 French Pro A season. The single most-watched pre-draft event of his career was the Metropolitans 92 exhibition tour of the United States in October 2022, specifically a game at Henderson, Nevada, against the G League Ignite, in which he scored 37 points against a team that featured Scoot Henderson. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Giannis Antetokounmpo attended or watched the game by broadcast, and LeBron’s “alien” quote came after it.

The 2023 NBA Draft

San Antonio won the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery with a 14 percent chance of the top pick and selected Wembanyama first overall on June 22, 2023. It was the first time San Antonio had held the No. 1 overall pick since the 1997 selection of Tim Duncan, and the sequencing of the two picks, both generational power forward/center types, twenty-six years apart, both to the same franchise, is the reason the 2023 lottery was discussed across the entire league as a generation-defining event.

First NBA season (2023–24)

He was Rookie of the Year by a unanimous vote. The full per-game line: 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks, and 1.2 steals on 46.5 percent shooting and 32.5 percent from three. His rookie cards are among the most-collected in recent NBA history; a Panini NBA Hoops Basketball Trading Card Blaster Box is the standard entry point for collectors looking for Wembanyama pulls. No rookie in NBA history had averaged 20 points and 3 blocks and 3 assists. No rookie in NBA history had made a hundred three-pointers while averaging 10 rebounds. The 3.6 blocks per game led the league; the last rookie to lead the NBA in a defensive category at any level was David Robinson in 1989–90.

The Spurs finished 22–60. The on-court result was separate from the individual year. San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich, whose 2013–2022 Spurs had been a model of veteran structure, played him almost exclusively at center in the second half of the season after experimenting with a power-forward alignment next to Zach Collins in the first half.

Second NBA season (2024–25) and the injury break

His second season produced the first All-NBA selection of his career and the first All-Defensive First Team selection. He played 46 regular-season games before the February All-Star break, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 blocks, and 1.1 steals, before a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis in his right shoulder shut him down for the remainder of the year. The condition is not career-threatening and is fully treatable with the anticoagulation protocol the Spurs medical staff put him on. He is expected to resume full basketball activity by the start of the 2025–26 season.

The four-month absence did not change the shape of the case for his career. San Antonio went from a play-in-adjacent team to a lottery team immediately after he was shut down, a result that spoke to his on-court impact as clearly as any on-court game did.

Team France

He was a silver medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, playing in front of a hometown French crowd at Bercy Arena. France lost to the United States in the gold-medal game after beating Canada and Germany on the way in. Wembanyama led France in scoring and blocks across the tournament. The Olympic run, at age 20, was the first time most American basketball viewers saw him play against Team USA’s starting five in a stakes game. The matchup went over twice as many Olympic viewing households as the previous record (set by the 2012 USA vs. Spain Olympic final).

What makes this career unusual

The usual way to describe a very tall center’s skill set is to list the things he cannot do: he cannot shoot from the perimeter reliably, he cannot pass out of a double-team, he cannot defend in space. Wembanyama’s skill set is defined by the absence of that list. He can shoot, he shot over 30 percent from three on more than six attempts a game as a rookie, which no seven-footer in the pre-Porziņģis era had ever done. He can pass, his 3.9 assists a game as a rookie are a top-ten mark for a rookie center in league history. He can defend on the perimeter, his on-ball defensive possessions against guards produced a higher opponent-turnover rate than his on-ball possessions against centers. The normal argument for a player of his age is projection. The argument for him is what he has already done.

Legacy (through age 21)

By the summer of 2025 the relevant comparables in the Basketball-Reference age-matched database were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and David Robinson for the production, LeBron James for the pre-draft hype and reception, and nobody at all for the height-and-skill combination. The career ahead of him will be measured against championship production in his San Antonio years, against how his body holds up under the minutes of a full sixteen-season career, and against whether the shooting and passing volume continue to scale as he moves into his mid-twenties. What the record already shows is that the 2023 draft was not a normal draft and the player on the floor is not a normal player. That was clear in October 2022 at the Henderson exhibition, and it has been clear in every NBA game he has played since.

Signature Shoes

Nike signed Wembanyama before his first NBA game, the first pre-debut signature deal the company had offered since LeBron James in 2003. His first signature model launched in 2025, making him one of the youngest players to have a named Nike line active in the market.
